General Rose Information
- American Rose Society Rose Care Articles: A selection of articles written especially for their site.
- HelpMeFind.com: If you want to purchase a new rose but can’t find a picture, try here. This site also has hybridizing info, when available.
Pest Control
- Baldo Villegas’ Sactorose site: Baldo’s site is a great stop if you want to know what’s been eating your plants, or for illustrations of what might be wrong with them, nutrient-wise.
- The NYS Pesticide Product, Ingredient, and Manufacturer System (PIMS): This site will let you know about the chemicals you have or are planning to purchase. Be aware: just because you can purchase a chemical mail order doesn’t mean you should - it may be a restricted chemical. Restricted means the chemical can only be purchased and used by licensed pesticide applicators.
- Regulating Pesticides: This is the EPA’s page on the topic. From here there are links to your specific state.
Weather Conditions and History
- Weather.gov: I prefer my data straight from the tap, so to speak. I trust my instincts much more than the brainless talking heads on the TV who didn’t even grow up here. (Sound familiar?) Enter your zip code in the upper left-hand text box where it says “Local forecast by… ” for best results. For a local example of where I live, click here.
- Weather records: Do you want to know how much rain has fallen to see if you should (or shouldn’t water)? Or how hot (cold) it was last week? Weather stations (in NWS parlance, local climatology reporting locations) all around the country keep these records for their station and surrounding (participating) cities and airports. From the weather.gov main page, scroll to the bottom and under the headline “Climate” click “Records.” This will take you to a map of the US. Find your local weather reporting station and click.
- This example is for my area, in a general sense - the records are kept by the Binghamton station but are recorded for Syracuse, about 45 minutes to the west of where I live. YMMV.
- You may have a Observed Weather tab. Select “Monthly Weather Summary (CLM)”, Location as your location, Timeframe as either “Most Recent” or the month just past, and click Go to view.
