The Syracuse Rose Society had their rose show this past Sunday at Carousel Center Mall, and unlike other years, I had very little to contribute, rose-wise. My star performer, Winchester Cathedral, is recovering from a severe pruning (you might say “sulking”), and the majority of roses I was counting on bloomed beautifully… Tuesday. *sigh* If those three days of rain and cool had been 2 days of hot & sunny I would’ve had so many more roses.
Interestingly enough, my “New Dawn” climber got 3rd in the “Climbers - One Blooming Lateral” class, and little “Anne Boleyn” was one of the blue ribbons in the “Shrub” class! I say little because the plant doesn’t get more than 2 1/2 feet tall but it is terribly charming. This year is the third year (I think) for the climber and finally - finally! - it’s blooming its little heart out. I guess it’s time to take the photos.
This weekend is the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Herb & Flower Festival. I won’t be there as I’m attending a consulting rosarian class in Syracuse, but I am baking for the Bake Sale. Which means tonight and tomorrow I’ll have the ol’ ovens powered up and radiating.
